Specialising in style precision cutting, ammonia free hair colouring and organic hair care, Underground Hair has been providing a fresh alternative approach to hairdressing for over 40 years. Our very experienced stylists offer you quality, individual, honest and practical advice in all aspects of hair care.

Our dedicated and hard working staff have won numerous awards over the years, including the American Crew Face-Off Championship in 2006.

Underground is Adelaide’s longest running salon. In 1960 Tony Caruso left Sicily bound for Australia. He quickly established himself as Adelaide’s number 1 barber/stylist at Scott’s Barber Shop in Rundle Street (now Rundle Mall).

In 1967 Tony opened his own hair salon. It was the first mens shop to have wash basins and to branch away from ‘just the barber shop mentality’. Tony also styled hair which was something no one else did back in that time for Men. Business flourished from 3 chairs to 12 with personalised service and old fashioned hard work. In 1980 the salon went unisex and relocated further down the Mall to the current site in Rundle Mall (downstairs) opposite the iconic silver balls.

Davide, Tony’s son, joined him in 1986. After his apprenticeship Davide made his own mark in Adelaide and overseas. After 7 years abroad he returned to the family business in 1999. Upon his return, the two combined their skills and business acumen to re-establish Underground as the premier hair destination for ladies and men in South Australia.
