MORNINGTON PARK WASTE TRANSFER STATION

We are all doing our bit every day to recycle

TASMANIANS TAKE THEIR RECYCLING SERIOUSLY AND AT MORNINGTON PARK WASTE TRANSFER STATION WE ARE NO DIFFERENT.
THE REALITY IS THAT RECYCLING IN AUSTRALIA IS NOT SIMPLE – BUT WE ARE WORKING HARD EVERY DAY TO DO OUR PART TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF RECOVERABLE MATERIALS GOING TO LANDFILL.
HERE ARE A FEW FACTS TO HELP YOU KNOW MORE ABOUT WHAT WE DO.
Australians generated approximately 1,200kg of waste per person per year in 1997 and 10 years later this had increased to 2,100kg per person. We are now in 2019 and Australians are producing approximately 2,700 tonnes of waste per person.

As Tasmanians, we are all doing our bit every day to recycle. Just over 80{665e1b5b4bb895be4050fcfcb53757b7af48610468dbed1c124bc360ab22ee1d} of us recycle well, but at times there are items in the recycle bin that just don’t belong there.

We divert as many items as possible from landfill and move them into useful downstream repurposed or value add products. This includes recycling of timber, cardboard, and metal.

Things that make it easier for us to recycle and reuse as many materials that come to Mornington Park Waste Transfer Station as possible include:

Placing your recycling in your bin loose – not in plastic bags, boxes or tied up with string.

Hard plastics (any plastic that is rigid and holds its shape) – removing caps and making sure they are clean and empty.

Glass bottles and jars – removing lids and making sure they are clean and empty.

Paper and cardboard – making sure that office paper, cardboard, letters and envelopes, junk mail, telephone books, pizza boxes, newspaper, magazines, pamphlets and paper bags are clean and not wet or dirty.

Metal cans – making sure that aluminium, steel and tin-plated cans are clean and empty.

You can see below the full range of items that we can accept for recycling or reuse. This includes items and materials that are sorted, cleaned, tested and checked for safety compliance before they are available for sale at our Second Chance Reuse Shop and Building Yard, which are located here at the Mornington Park Waste Transfer Station.
